about

between 7:52am on 9/27/17 and 7:52am on 9/28/17, i recorded and mixed this album in my bedroom. i used a DX-27 synth, a guitar, a bass guitar, drum samples, a floor tom, a xylophone and other knick knacks lying around my room.

my inspiration for doing a 24-hour recording session came from the feeling of constantly having fleeting musical ideas but being too busy, or away from home, and not being able to record them. there's an infinite world of musical ideas, and i rarely capture any of it.
i didn't write anything for the 24 hour session beforehand. the idea was, how many ideas do i come up with in a day, and what would it be like to actually capture all of them?

the question that didn't occur to me before starting was, is it a good idea to record music for 24 hours straight? the answer is, probably not. first of all, my caffeine intake was definitely unhealthy, and i annoyed my neighbors with the noise. also, as it turns out, many ideas come to me BECAUSE i'm out in the world doing things. that feeling of infinite possibility comes out of the flow of my actual life. sitting in front of a keyboard in the middle of the night with the expectation of making something can make that world of ideas feel smaller and smaller.

but having said that, i am happy with the results of this experiment and i am proud of the songs. i think the album is fun to listen to and it has a very wide range of styles. i allowed myself to fully pursue ideas that i normally would have set aside in favor of more "normal" songs. the process itself was fun and challenging, and i got to collaborate with three of my friends for the first time.

joey came over around 5:45pm and wrote some lyrics and sang on a song. thom came over around 9:30pm and recorded some guitar and keyboard on that same song. dent made a surprise appearance around 11:30pm and wrote some lyrics and sang on a song.

although the songs on the album aren't in chronological order, you can trace the progression from sharper, detail-minded and result-oriented songs that i made at the start and the more fuzzy, center-less, process-oriented songs i made in my more delirious states towards the end.

the point, if there is one, is that this is just one day and night of musical ideas. it made me more aware of all the possible creative avenues that are open, and it made me excited to keep working every day.
